What is a “Healthy Spirit”? By Rev. Jane Smolnik, ND, Iridologist, Certified Intuitive Healer, Master Herbalist
We all know what physical health is, and we now understand how our emotional health effects us physically. In the new Body, Mind, Spirit model of healing that we keep hearing about, do we really understand what spiritual health is and how it effects us emotionally and physically? Let’s look at the health of our Spirit, and the impact it has on our bodies and minds, and how strengthening the seven universal principles in our lives will actually strengthen our Spirit, and ultimately, our health!
It is becoming known that all illness, as well as healing, begins on a spiritual level first, and then filters down to our emotional self and the physical body follows suit. How? It all comes down to one question- How well do we, as a spiritual being, relate to everyone and everything? Do we feel connected or separate? How strongly does the universal energy of LOVE flow through us and into all of our relationships? This is the key to health and happiness as it fills us with this universal energy, the life force, and a sense of power and peace from within.
To understand how this energy flows through our bodies and effects every part of us, we have to look at this flow coming through our seven main energy centers, known as the Chakras, and where they are located in the body. This universal energy comes in through the crown of our heads and flows down through the center of our bodies, and down into the earth to ground us in our physical existence here, and back up again. Let’s explore each energy center and the universal principle and Spiritual quality of each so we can better understand the health of our Soul.
Our 7th Chakra, located at the crown of the head, has to do with our relationship to the Universe, All That Is, the Collective Consciousness, the Life Force, or whatever you want to call it. It brings us the quality of Wisdom, the highest knowledge, and is strengthened by the universal principle of Unity. What are our religious beliefs, and how do we feel about our Spirituality? In a healthy state we feel this connection of Unity. It can effect our entire neurological system physically when we don’t. Nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, and many other conditions can be related to a feeling of not being fully connected and supported by this life force, not seeing our place in it all, not being able to look at the BIG picture. The practices of prayer and communicating with the Collective Consciousness, and expanding our awareness, can help us strengthen our connection to All That Is and feel this sense of Unity, knowing that there is a divine purpose to ourselves and all of life. We feel safe.
Next is our 6th Chakra, located in the middle of our forehead, known as our “third eye.” This has to do with our personal relationship with God (or our Higher Power), and even any angels or guides. Do you have a personal relationship? Is it strong? Do you feel like you are not alone, like you have someone you can call upon for guidance and help? This is where our intuition, our inner knowing, lives. This energy center brings us the spiritual quality of Vision, and is strengthened by the universal principle of Perception. It is enhanced by meditation, by quieting ourselves, our mind chatter, so we can hear these inner messages and insights. It helps to bring us clarity and a personal vision for ourselves. When we keep our perception flexible and open to unlimited possibilities, by choosing to look for the positive when we are only seeing the negative, we can be open to more opportunities. The endocrine system, as well as the eyes, ears and nose, are effected by this chakra. Are we seeing, hearing, and taking in what helps us? Our endocrine glands send messages to guide the entire body how to live in harmony and health, much like our personal guides gently guide us in the right direction.
Now our 5th Chakra, which lives in our throat area, has to do with our relationships to the people closest to us and our ability to communicate and express ourselves with our authentic voice, our true feelings, in order to live with the spiritual quality of joy and inner peace. It is strengthened by the universal principle of Intention. What is our intention? What do we really want to create or achieve? Do we want to stifle ourselves, our spirit, or do we want to be heard, speaking clearly, honestly and from the heart? Can we really listen to others and hear their truth? Our throat and respiratory tract can be affected by what we breathe in, and by what comes out of our mouths. As we struggle to learn these valuable lessons, our lungs hold this difficulty, wondering if we are going to make it. Our survival depends on the very breathe of life! Breathe Awareness can help us stay focused and aware by bringing us right to the present moment when we put our attention on our breathe. We can then choose to breathe deeper, taking in more of the life force, experiencing life more fully and clarifying our intentions.
Our 4th Chakra lives in the center of being, in our heart. It is the center for Love and Compassion, first for our self, our body, our mind, and our soul. Only when we can fully embrace and love ourselves can we fully extend that same love and compassion to our partner, our children and humanity itself. Many of us struggle with betrayal, grief, or lack of self esteem. We don’t feel like we are good enough, important enough or truly valued and loved. We may have deep hurts. Our heart and circulatory system, as well as our immune system can be impaired when the energy here is weakened. Can we bathe our heart and soul in love and forgiveness through compassion, as we bathe our blood with life giving oxygen? And are we able to stand up for ourselves, defending our soul’s purpose? Passion is the universal principle that enhances this area and healing touch is the practice. As you place your hands over your heart, ask your heart and soul what it is passionate about? What does it love, what makes it sing? What brings joy to your heart? What feels right to you? Honor that feeling that comes from deep within. It is the essence of your soul, your light. Let it shine and grow. Fill your heart with love and it will spill into all areas of your life and heal your body!
Our Solar Plexus, which is located just above the belly button, holds our 3rd Chakra. This is our center for personal empowerment. It is about our relationship with our work in the world and the spiritual quality of Inner Power and Presence, which is strengthened by the universal principle of Trust. How do we feel about our creative gifts, talents, and abilities? Do we feel safe enough to put them out into the world, trusting that they will be received well by others, and bring us the rewards, encouragement and support we need? Can we trust the world to support each step we take? Can we trust our own strength and ability to move forward? Do we feel like we have control over our actions, our abilities, or do we give our power away? Our muscles can become weak, and our digestive system can be affected, becoming sluggish or irritated. We may hold anger and resentments, not able to eliminate these toxic emotions easily. This area is about standing strong, moving with confidence to be successful in your work. It is enhanced by the practice of movement with intention, such as when we exercise, or do yoga, Tai Chi or Tae Bo, walking or running, any movement with focused intention. We are building personal strength in our muscles and in our spirit, building trust and confidence. We are in charge!
Our 2nd Chakra is in our pelvic area affecting our reproductive organs and lower bowel. It is about our relationship to nature, and the ability to flow with the natural cycles of change. It brings the spiritual quality of intimacy and community, strengthened by the universal principle of Balance. Are we living in harmony with nature, staying in balance? Do we have an intimate relationship with the natural world and trust the gifts it has to offer us? Can we flow easily with the personal changes in our lives, from our past self, to our future self? Or is there pain and congestion when we can’t let go easily so something new can come into our lives? Our ability to bring forth new creations is enhanced by the practice of creative expression of any kind, be it song, dance, art, writing, or music. We are naturally creative beings, let it flow.
Finally, our 1st Chakra is located at the base of our spine and is about our relationship to our global family. When we feel connected to all, we happily want to work in service to all, knowing that by helping others we help ourselves. This is where abundance and manifestation comes into our lives, when we are dedicated to the effort of helping, not attached to the outcome of what we will get out of it. Can we easily manifest opportunities and finances in our lives? When we support all, all support us. Our skeletal system and joints will be strong. We feel fully supported by life and our global family. There can be a lot of pain and weakening in our bones, especially when we feel like we have to do it all ourselves, like we are not being supported by others. We feel separate and weak. Conscious altruism, service to others, can help to strengthen this area. When we happily offer to give to and help others, it makes us happy and satisfied to know that it made a difference in someone’s life, and others are naturally drawn to reciprocate. No one has to be in need when All support All.
So how does your Spirit relate to your Self, to the people closest to you, your community, your global family, your work, your environment, your God and your Universe? Does it feel happy? Does it have loving relationships, enjoy success and abundance, have a strong, healthy body and feel empowered? Divine LOVE is the Universal Energy of all life. Life is about learning how to bring more love to our self and into all of our relationships, so we may realize and experience the joy and peace of the cosmic force as a strong and healthy creative Spirit! We were designed as creative beings. It is only through expanding our awareness and making the choice, in every moment of every day, that we can heal our spirits and renew our strength, to be living in the light.
