The Importance of Internal Cleansing
by Jane Smolnik, N.D., Certified Intuitive, Iridologist and Herbalist
Proper bowel care and management is an embarrassing and avoided topic in western society.
Unfortunately, the medical profession, with all of its technological advances, has been intent on curing
symptoms with prescription drugs and surgical techniques, while drifting further away from the old school
of natural and non-invasive healing methods.
Many experts claim that the bowel is the hub of the human body. They also claim that toxic build-up in the
bowel is a precursor to many various types of health issues. Every tissue in the body is fed by the
bloodstream, which is supplied by the bowel. When the bowel is dirty, the blood is dirty and so are the
organs and tissues that it feeds. It is the bowel that must be cared for first.
Proper bowel function entails having 2 to 3 good bowel movements per day! Most people are not aware of
this and go through their daily lives eliminating once a day, once every other day, or even less! So where
are the other 2 meals hiding? Take an infant as an example: ask any mother for further proof that a baby
will eat and then eliminate. Their new digestive systems have not had time to develop mal-absorption
problems caused by improper diet, environmental toxins, and stress. Faulty digestion and elimination
develop in an individual through years of improper lifestyle and dietary habits.
When we are not eliminating properly, wastes may not be expelled for days, even weeks, months, or years.
When we don't eliminate our waste, toxins back up in the colon, which can cause auto-intoxication -or
self-poisoning. This occurs when the bowel walls become encrusted with un-eliminated fecal matter,
hampering the absorption of vital nutrients and providing a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria and
parasites. Blood capillaries lining the bowel wall begin to absorb these toxins into the bloodstream,
consequently polluting all of our organs and cells.
The toxic wastes have nowhere to go, so they build-up in the bowel. These poisons eventually seep into
every cell in the body, setting the stage for "disease." This auto-intoxication lowers our overall felling of
health and vitality. We start to blame other factors such as aging on why we experience a lack of vitality, why
we don't have "zip" in our walk, or that "sparkle" in our eyes. The true fact is that age has nothing to do with
the depletion of energy and less than optimal health. We age from the inside out! Ninety percent of the time
these complaints can be alleviated through internal cleansing techniques.
Obvious symptoms of an unhealthy digestive tract:
Poor digestion, gas, skin problems, body odor, poor elimination, stomach bloat, fatigue, lower backache,
bad breath, stiff joints, headaches, and the list goes on!
Common Causes of Toxicity:
1. Poor Elimination - The colon is your body's sewage system. If your sewage system backs up, toxins
become trapped in your colon. These toxins are fermenting and decaying in your colon, often being
reabsorbed into the bloodstream, polluting our tissues, organs, and cells (known as "leaky gut").
2. Poor Diet - Poor diet includes dead, cooked, devitalized, microwaved, clogging, low fiber or fried foods,
etc. This type of diet sets the stage for intestinal problems. These foods, unlike live, fresh foods (fruits,
vegetables, sprouts), lack the vital digestive plant enzymes needed to assist in proper digestion and
assimilation, and lack the fiber or bulk to assist in proper elimination. They are also lacking in essential
vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
3. Over-Consumption - Over-eating puts a great amount of stress on our digestive system. The body must
produce hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzymes, bile, and other digestive factors to process a meal. When
we over-eat, the digestive system cannot always meet the demands placed upon it. The stomach bloats as
the digestive system goes into turmoil. Foods are not properly broken down and tend to lodge in the lower
intestines. Vital nutrients are not absorbed.
4. Lack of Water - Water makes up 65% to 75% of the human body. It is second only to oxygen in order of
importance to sustain life. Water cleanses the inside of the body as well as the outside. It is instrumental in
flushing out wastes and toxins. When the body is not receiving enough water, toxins tend to stagnate,
hindering all digestive and eliminative processes. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day is recommended.
5. Stress - Stress affects every cell and tissue in the human body by breaking down the immune system
and all of the major organs. It robs the body of important vitamins and minerals, and over time, can cause
severe acid buildup. Stress hinders the proper digestion, absorption, and elimination of foods by throwing
the digestive system out of balance. The worst thing a person can do is to eat while experiencing extreme
stress. Nutrients will not be absorbed, and indigestion will add to the stress.
6. Antibiotics - Antibotics have a damaging effect on the intestines. Their prescribed purpose is to
eliminate unhealthy bacteria in the body -- bacteria that causes illness. However, antibiotics also eliminate
the healthy, necessary, good bacteria. They strip the colon of ALL intestinal flora. This puts the digestive,
eliminative, and immune systems out of balance, creating problems in the colon as well as the entire
intestinal tract.
7. Lack of Exercise - Exercise strengthens the entire body and is VERY important! It stimulates the
circulatory and lymphatic system, building muscles, nerves, blood, glands, lungs, heart, brain, mind, and
mood. Blood is pumped throughout the body by the heart, but lymphatic fluid depends on exercise to be
circulated. Lack of exercise lowers metabolic efficiency, and without circulatory stimulation, the body's
natural cleansing systems are weakened.
8. Eating late at night - The human body uses sleep to repair, rebuild, and restore itself. In essence, the
body cleanses and rebuilds during the night. When a person goes to sleep with a full stomach, the body is
not at rest. It is actually busy digesting and processing a large amount of food. This inhibits the vital
cleansing, building, and restorative processes that normally occur while one sleeps.
The world is consciously becoming unbalanced. We are becoming more and more out of touch with our
bodies natural cycles of nature. Billions of people live in cities and do not grow their own food-- we do not
know what's in our drinking water-- contamination is everywhere. To what degree is our food and water
contaminated with chemicals from sprays, industrial run off, and preservatives? To what degree are
poisonous gases and chemicals in the air causing damage to the ozone layer (that filters out deadly
ultra-violet rays) and air pollution in congested cities? A polluted environment, over-processed and
nutrient-deficient food, fast living, and too much stress (suppressing the immune system) put us
continually at risk for developing life-threatening diseases.
Consequently, toxic waste material can build up in our bodies from these impurities that we ingest and
inhale. More specifically, the build up occurs in the large intestine or colon --from the consumption of
artificially sweetened carbonated beverages, junk food (processed foods), chemically sprayed fruits and
vegetables, hormone-injected meats, and polluted water.
When the walls of the small and large intestines are packed with accumulated waste materials and toxins,
the body is unable to fully absorb nutrients from the foods and supplements consumed, and therefore
cannot rebuild itself (the epithelial cells that line our intestinal tract, as well as our skin, regenerate every 5
days.) The toxic waste material begins to ferment and putrefy, and the poisons are then reabsorbed into
our body (via the blood). According to Dr. Bernard Jensen, the average healthy person has between 7 to 25
pounds of toxic waste materials in their colon! Just imagine buying a hamburger and leaving it in a plastic
bag on the counter for a few weeks. What would it smell like? This process of putrefication is basically what
takes place in the colon if waste is not removed. Over time, the poisons build up and leak out.
The Royal Society of Medicine in Great Britain conducted research into many of the chronic, largest growing
health challenges such as Alzheimer's Disease, arthritis, allergies, asthma, heart conditions, and high
blood pressure, to name a few. From this prestigious society, 57 of the top physicians and surgeons
discovered that 95% of all health challenges result from the buildup of toxins from the accumulated waste
materials in the colon (fecal matter) -- the breeding ground for parasites that can spread throughout the
body. Most dramatically, these physicians concluded that "death begins in the colon!"
