Top Ten Healthy Eating Habits by Jane Smolnik, ND, Iridologist, Medicinal Herbalist
It's not always 'what' you eat that is the problem, it is also 'how', 'when', 'where', and 'why' you eat that can make a big difference!
1. Always pause to say "Thanks", be grateful to all the people who were involved in planting, growing, harvesting, shipping, selling, and preparing this food to nourish your body.
2. Chew thoroughly!!! Always chew 50-100 times per mouthful. Never swallow chunks! Chew until liquid for best digestion and absorption!
3. Always SIT and relax when eating! Never stand, watch T.V., read the paper, talk on the phone, etc. It disconnects your body from your mind.
4. Avoid foods TOO HOT or TOO COLD! Especially too cold, avoid ice drinks, ice pops, it cools your internal temp., slows digestion.
5. Avoid eating too late in the day! Ability to digest decreases after sunset. Ideally you should fast for 12 hours every night. (Don't eat after 7 or 8 PM)
6. Avoid artificial, synthetic, processed, and microwaved foods. This includes artificial sweetners, carbonated beverages, "enriched" foods, prepackaged "quick" foods, colorings, artificial flavorings, all additives.
7. Avoid eating fruits with meals. This is poor food combining. Eat fruits in the AM and inbetween meals for snacks. This will avoid acid indigestion.
8. Avoid drinking liquids with meals. Have only a SMALL amount, otherwise it dilutes your natural stomach acid, decreases ability to digest.
9. Select high quality foods. Eat whole, fresh, organic foods whenever possible. Fresh raw, steamed, or baked vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, seeds, raw nuts, beans, etc. Avoid or limit animal products to organic only.
10. ALWAYS wash your hands before eating!!! We are exposed to bacteria and parasites DAILY! You should cleanse your bowel of toxins, buildup, and parasites once or twice a year for best absorption of nutrients, proper elimination of waste, no overgrowth of bacteria, yeast, fungus, or toxins.
